Evidence of life on Mars lurks beneath surface of meteorite, Nasa experts claim
Mars, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope
Nasa scientists have produced the most compelling evidence yet that bacterial
life exists on Mars.
It showed that microscopic worm-like structures found in a Martian meteorite
that hit the Earth 13,000 years ago are almost certainly fossilised
bacteria. The so-called bio-morphs are embedded beneath the surface layers
of the rock, suggesting that they were already present when the meteorite
arrived, rather than being the result of subsequent contamination by Earthly
bacteria.
“This is very strong evidence of life on Mars,” said David Mackay, a senior
scientist at the Nasa
Johnson Space Centre , who was part of the team of scientists that
originally investigated the meteorite when it was discovered in 1984.
In a 1996 study of the sample, Dr Mackay and others argued that the
microfossils were evidence of life, but sceptics dismissed the claims,
saying that similar-shaped structures might not be biological. The new
analyses, the product of high resolution electron microscopy, make a strong
case for the Allan Hills 84001 Meteorite having carried Martian life to
Earth. The microscopes were focused on tiny magnetite crystals present in
the surface layers of the meteorite, which have the form of simple bacteria.
Some argued that these could be the result of a carbonate breaking down in
the heat of the impact.
The new analyses show that this is very unlikely to have resulted in the kinds
of structures seen in the rock. Close examination suggested that about 25
per cent of the crystal structures were chemically consistent with being
formed from bacteria.
“We feel vindicated. We’ve shown the alternate explanation is absolutely
incorrect, leading us back to our original position that these structures
are formed by bacteria on Mars,” Dr Mackay said.
Dennis Bazylinski, an astrobiologist from the University of Nevada who
peer-reviewed the findings, said: “Until now I was on the fence but this
paper has really thrown out the non-biological explanation.” However, he
added that the study was not a “smoking gun” for life on Mars. “One
meteorite is never going to answer such a complex question,” he said.
According to scientists, the meteorite was broken off the surface of Mars by
the impact of an asteroid, and reached Earth after floating through space
for about 16 million years. It landed in Allan Hills in Antarctica.
Scientists were able to trace the meteorite back to Mars, as its chemical
composition matched the relative proportions of various gases measured in
observations of the atmosphere of Mars made by the Viking spacecraft in the
1970s.
The meteorite also preserves evidence of liquid water on Mars, suggesting that
the planet may have had more suitable conditions for life to develop in the
past. The investigation was published in the November issue of Geochimica et
Cosmochimica Acta, the journal of the Geochemical and Meteoritic Society.
Nasa is expected to announce the findings formally on Monday.
The team has also been studying two other Martian meteorites — Nakhla, which
landed in Egypt in 1911, and Yamato 593, which was found by a Japanese
expedition to Antarctica. In research due to be published shortly, the
scientists claim that both of these fossils also show evidence of microbial
life.
Bill Clinton, then the US President, said of the research in 1997: “It speaks
of the possibility of life. If this discovery is confirmed, it will surely
be one of the most stunning insights into our Universe that science has ever
uncovered. Its implications are as far-reaching and awe-inspiring as can be
imagined.”

One in a Million-January 16, 2009
NEW YORK – A jetliner that crash-landed in the Hudson River had lost
power simultaneously in both engines after reaching an altitude of only
3,200 feet, the plane's black box recorders revealed Sunday.
The
details that emerged confirmed the harrowing circumstances under which
the pilot of the US Airways flight carrying 155 people maneuvered the
plane over New York City and safely into the water after striking a flock of birds Thursday afternoon.
"The captain makes radio call to ATC (air traffic control)
calling mayday and reports that they hit birds, lost both engines and
were returning to LaGuardia" airport, said Kitty Higgins, a National Transportation Safety Board member, releasing cockpit transmissions captured on flight data and voice recorders.
She
heaped praise on the flight crew, led by US Airways Capt. Chesley B.
"Sully" Sullenberger, who spoke to NTSB investigators Saturday.
"Miracles
happen because a lot of everyday things happen for years and years and
years," she said. "These people knew what they were supposed to do and
they did it and as a result, nobody lost their life."
Sullenberger
released a statement deferring to the advice. "The Sullenbergers
continue to thank their many well-wishers for the incredible outpouring
of support," the statement said.
Mayor
Newell Arnerich said Lorraine Sullenberger told city officials that the
family would leave for the East Coast on Sunday. She and the couple's
daughters haven't seen Sullenberger since he's been hailed as a hero
for saving the lives of all 155 on board.
Kelsey Higginbotham, a 20-year-old student at East Tennessee State University, peered at the crippled aircraft Sunday from behind police barricades.
She
and a friend had been to Times Square, Central Park and the site of the
World Trade Center, where nearly 2,800 people were killed in the Sept. 11 attacks.
She said she was struck by the contrast between one disaster in which
so many people died and another in which everyone survived.
"It's a miracle," she said. "I guess New Yorkers can't take any more tragedy."

Jules mimics the expressions by converting the video image into digital commands that make the robot's servos and motors produce mirrored movements. And it all happens in real time as the robot can interpret the commands at 25 frames per second. The project, called 'Human-Robot Interaction', was devised at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL), run by the University of the West of England and the University of Bristol.

Unknown insects found in 110-million-year-old amber in Spain July 24, 2008 MADRID (AFP) - The remains of several unknown insect species which became extinct long before dinosaurs stopped roaming the earth have been discovered in pieces of 110-million-year-old amber found in Spain, researchers said Thursday.
Palaeontologist Enrique Penalver said the amber discovered in the El Soplao cave in the northern province of Cantabria was in "exceptional" condition."The conservation is incredible. You can study the details," he told a news conference in Santander according to the Europea Press agency.Several types of arachnids, as well spider webs and plant remains, were found fossilised in the amber discovered at the site, added Penalver, a researcher with the science ministry's Geology and Mine Institute. It is the most important amber find to date in Spain and possibly in all of Europe, he added. There are few other amber finds from that era in the world, he said.

Most complex crop circle ever discovered in British fields
By Richard Savill (London Telegrah.co.uk)
Last Updated: 2:33PM BST 19/06/2008
The most complex, "mind-boggling" crop circle ever to be seen in Britain has been discovered in a barley field in Wiltshire.
APEX PICTURES
The circle is a coded representation of pi to the 10th significant figure
The formation, measuring 150ft in diameter, is apparently a coded image representing the first 10 digits, 3.141592654, of pi.
It is has appeared in a field near Barbury Castle, an iron-age hill fort above Wroughton, Wilts, and has been described by astrophysicists as "mind-boggling". Michael Reed, an astrophysicist, said: "The tenth digit has even been correctly rounded up. The little dot near the centre is the decimal point. "The code is based on 10 angular segments with the radial jumps being the indicator of each segment.
"Starting at the centre and counting the number of one-tenth segments in each section contained by the change in radius clearly shows the values of the first 10 digits in the value of pi."
Lucy Pringle, a researcher of crop formations, said: "This is an astounding development - it is a seminal event."
Mathematics codes and geometric patterns have long been an important factor in crop circle formations. One of the best known formations showed the image of a highly complex set of shapes known as The Julia Set, 12 years ago.
